Today marks World Pizza Day, a celebration for pizza lovers everywhere. And what better place to honour this beloved dish than Naples, the birthplace of pizza? While flatbreads topped with various ingredients date back to ancient times, modern pizza began in Naples in the 18th century when tomatoes from the Americas were added to bread. In 1889, the Pizza Margherita was created to honour Queen Margherita of Savoy, with its red, white and green toppings—tomato, mozzarella and basil—representing the Italian flag. It became a symbol of Italian culture, conviviality and tradition.
